The organization developed the evaluation system which evaluates corps on several performance criteria. Establishing the World Class division in 1975, DCI categorizes its corps into various divisions based on skill and competitive standard. The 1987 DCI World Championships included a memorable tie between the Blue Devils and The Cadets, marking a rare occurrence in DCI events. Strikingly, 2020 DCI competitive season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, marking the first time in its history that DCI did not hold a competitive year. Organizing the DCI Championships since 1972, DCI has established itself as the premier competition for drum corps; interestingly, 1991 DCI championships featured the first-ever use of electronic instruments in a corps performance.
