About Sam Bush in Springfield
Sam Bush is a recipient of the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts in the 2016 awards. Starting his musical career in the 1970s, Bush helped establish the groundbreaking band the innovative group New Grass Revival. Bush is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of innovative bluegrass styles. Interestingly, Bush began playing the mandolin at the age of 11 years, motivated by the sounds of traditional bluegrass that resonated in his home. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of New Grass Revival in 2015, Sam Bush reflected on the band’s contribution on the bluegrass genre; remarkably, Bush's 1975 album New Grass Revival featured a blend of traditional bluegrass, rock music, and jazz that pushed against established bluegrass conventions.
