Additionally, the original cast included Gwen Verdon as the character Roxie, Rivera as Kelly, and Jerry Orbach as Billy Flynn. Addressing the struggles of females in a gender-biased society, the characters contend for their place in the world; interestingly, the musical is based on a 1926 play by the playwright Watkins, which was inspired by true criminal figures and occurrences.
