About Lakecia Benjamin at Folly Theater
Benjamin is a promoter for social justice themes in her music often tackling issues of ethnicity and social identity. Directing the band Soul Squad, she blended jazz with soul influences to create a signature style. In two thousand fifteen, the musician released her first album, her album Retox, which highlighted her unique blend of jazz influences and funk elements. Significantly, she has been a member of the women’s jazz collective, The all-female band, which supports women's contributions to jazz. Displaying her abilities at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, she connected with an expansive audience; furthermore, she has been involved in financial support campaigns for music education organizations, aiding young performers.
