About A Christmas Carol at Ford's Theatre
A Christmas Carol was written in just six weeks following Dickens' visit to the Manchester Athenaeum where he saw the harsh realities of the laborers. The story is set in Victorian London during the Christmas season. The novella was illustrated by John Leech, whose artwork helped spread the word about the narrative. Interestingly, the character of Ebenezer Scrooge was inspired by a real-life person named Ebenezer Scroggie, who was a miserly city of Edinburgh grain trader. The book was illustrated by John Leech; in fact, the initial print run of 6, 000 copies sold out by the night before Christmas in that year.
