Appalachian State Mountaineers is the host of the traditional Rocky Mountaineer event, fostering school spirit and local participation. By engaging with local youth programs, Appalachian State develops the next generation of athletes and fans. Following the 1987 season, the university's wrestling program became a significant competitor in the Southern Conference wrestling scene. In 1990, the team achieved a notable triumph in the playoffs. In 2021, the team’s blocking group was recognized for its achievements. Due to their multiple conference accolades, including Coach of the Year honors, the team has been recognized for excellence.
