About Sun Ra Arkestra at SFJAZZ Center - Miner Auditorium
Sun Ra Arkestra is famous for their 1974 album 'The Cosmic Journey' which features some of their most celebrated pieces. Recording Lanquidity in 1978, the ensemble experimented with improvisational jazz and spontaneous music. In 1990, Sun Ra was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant to bolster his artistic pursuits. Interestingly, Sun Ra composed over 200 original works, fusing jazz with styles from various musical traditions. Engaging in dialogues about race, identity, and innovation, the band's work goes past music to address societal issues; moreover, Sun Ra frequently collaborated with avant-garde filmmakers, creating an original combination of sound and visual art.
