The first Sherlock Holmes story, 'A Study in Scarlet ', was published in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887. Remarkably, Gillette's portrayal introduced the curved pipe and the phrase 'Elementary, my dear Watson ' to the Holmes mythology. Writing the stories with a touch of humor, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle included witty dialogue between Holmes and Watson; remarkably, the character's adventures have been adapted into comic books and graphic novels, reaching fresh audiences.
