About Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion
The company is known for its emphasis on ensemble work which highlights the skill and strength of the entire company. Establishing a mentorship program the company encourages the growth of emerging choreographers and dancers. The choreographer often collaborated with prominent composers, such as Ellington and Strayhorn, to create music that complemented his choreography. Significantly, in 1989, Ailey was awarded the National Medal of Arts after his passing, solidifying his influence in the arts. Emphasizing the importance of cultural representation the organization consistently pursues to include diverse voices in its performances; importantly, his commitment to nurturing young talent led to the establishment of the Ailey/Fordham BFA Program, which combines performance arts education with scholarly pursuits.
