About Sun Ra Arkestra at SFJAZZ Center - Miner Auditorium
The group is famous for their album from 1974 'The Cosmic Journey' which features some of their most iconic compositions. Reinterpreting classic jazz standards, the Arkestra often gives them a new twist through their avant-garde lens. The ensemble's signature song, an anthem of the cosmos, became a symbol for the Afrofuturism movement. Notably, Sun Ra was influenced by the teachings of the Black spiritual figure, the founder of the Moorish Science Temple. Presenting an unique blend of performance art and auditory experience, Sun Ra Arkestra's live shows are known for their spectacular and musical spectacle; additionally, the Arkestra gained a dedicated fan base, particularly in the sixties and seventies, due to their unique performances and recordings.
